Nestlé
Nestlé sponsors sustainable development programmes for the women of Setiu, to empower them to enhance their livelihoods with the new skills learned from the programmes.

Few Malaysians have heard of the Setiu Wetlands in Terengganu, an area rich in natural resources and in need of conservation. Vital for the fisheries sector, the wetlands are also home to Malaysia’s largest breeding population of the critically endangered Painted terrapins and River terrapins. Moreover, the Setiu Wetlands act as a natural filter of pollutants and provide flood control for the area.

WWF-Malaysia & Nestlé are helping to build the skills of local women to enhance their livelihoods through involvement with sustainable development activities. This initiative started in early 2006 where Nestlé funded a survey of the socio-economic needs and current condition of communities in key Setiu villages to identify the capacity-building needs of the local communities, particularly the women of Setiu. As mothers and co-income earners, they play an important role in the area’s long-term sustainable development.

As a result, a core group, comprising of interested local women from Kg Mangkuk, was formed in April 2008. Monthly community training sessions and study visits focused on entrepreneurship and participation in conservation, targeted especially but not exclusively, at members of the women’s core group.
