Living Planet Appeal
Dear Friend,

Always, at this time of year when I write to thank you for your unwavering support, I’m at a loss for words. More so this year, knowing that despite very trying economic times, you have continued to generously support us.

THE ENCOURAGING NEWS…

We have achieved our fundraising targets by successfully raising 16% more than last year. As one of our loyal donors, you more than anyone know how we struggle each year to sustain our projects. Which is why even today as I thank you for helping us with our efforts and successes for 2009, I humbly ask you again if you could please give us an additional gift to kick-start our efforts for 2010. How can I justify this request? In no other way except by presenting you the facts as they stand.

Among others, our main successes this year came from:

•    Record-breaking returns from our “Egg=Life” turtle conservation campaign. By returns I mean not only fundraising but we also obtained more than 100,000 signatures in support of this cause.

•    Vital new images captured in June of our near-extinct Sumatran rhino in the Heart of Borneo. Vital because this pictorial proof helps strengthen the argument to sustainably manage the forests in this part of the region.

THE TRAGIC REALITY…

As always, dear friend, all is not rosy in the world of conservation. Heartbreakingly, this past year we have tragically lost many of our tigers to poaching.

In total, our tiger loss for 2009: 16 tigers confirmed dead, 250 kg of tiger parts and 3 kg of tiger bones confiscated by authorities. And these are just the losses we have detected. What about those killed undetected over the years?

Poaching as you know is not a ‘tiger exclusive’ phenomenon. Our hawksbill turtles are in demand for their beautiful shells, rhinos for their horns, orang-utans as exotic pets; and the list goes on and on.

There are two main reasons for this:

•    Wildlife poaching fuelled by ceaseless demand. Poaching is a disease spread by greed and driven by market demand. But it’s a disease reaching pandemic proportions that we cannot afford to ignore.

•    Weaknesses in our Law. The Protection of Wild Life Act 1972 in it’s current form is inadequate, contains loopholes and the penalties are not stringent enough to act as deterrents to wildlife offenders. As a result, many wildlife species continue to be hunted and illegally traded at alarming rates.

Please help us to fight for major breakthroughs to rid our cause of these stumbling blocks once and for all. In our line of work, money = action.
Any sum you can spare will be gratefully received. Thank you once again for all that you continuously help us achieve.

Sincerely,

Dato’ Dr Dionysius S. K. Sharma
