Rehabilitation works between WWF-Malaysia and Sawit Kinabalu continues for another 10 years

Green Turtles, where art thou?
WWF-Malaysia’s Terengganu Turtle Programme, in partnership with the Department of Fisheries Terengganu have successfully deployed satellite transmitters on four female Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) between 17 and 24 August 2008. Turtles are mysterious seafaring animals. The installation of a Platform Transmitter Terminal (PTT) on the turtle carapace (shell) allows researchers to track its movements and migratory pathways in the ocean. » Read more

Tracking hawksbills in Melaka
WWF-Malaysia, in partnership with the Department of Fisheries Melaka and Kem Terendak military base camp, has successfully deployed a satellite transmitter on a female hawksbill turtle in the wee hours of 13 August 2008 after she successfully nested. This is the third and final deployment of satellite transmitters in Melaka for this year by WWF-Malaysia; two others have been deployed on hawksbills nesting at Pulau Upeh and Padang Kemunting on 4 August and 13 July 2008 respectively.

Mabul Marine Week: Dive operators come closer together for good of the environment
The strong competitive nature that exists amongst resort owners and dive operators on Mabul Island is being put aside during Mabul Marine Week, a week focused on protecting the marine environment. This week, which started on 19 July 2008, is an up-scaled version of Mabul Marine Day, an event celebrated over the past 10 years which is the brain-child of Sipadan Water Village Resort.

Joint Statement by the Friends of Ulu Muda II on the Proposed Logging at Ulu Muda

Hari Kebudayaan Maliangin – Culture and Conservation
Hari Kebudayaan Maliangin was held on Maliangin Besar Island last Sunday to showcase the people, environment and cultures that exist on Maliangin and its surrounding areas. During the event, the traditions of the Suluk, Ubian, and Kagayan ethnic tribes, in the form of food, dance performances and musical instruments, houses, and handicraft, were showcased.

WWF welcomes the Heart of Borneo’s Strategic Action Plan
In the 9th Conference of Parties to the Convention of Biological Diversity (COP9) in Bonn, Germany, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia announce Trinational Action Plans to conserve Heart of Borneo (27/05). All the three Bornean countries are to be congratulated for their commitment towards the transboundary conservation programme, global conservation organization WWF said today. » Read more

WWF-Malaysia calls for clarification on decision for Coal-Fired Power Plant
According to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the generation capacity in Sabah (supplied by Sabah Electricity Sdn. Bhd. and Independent Power Producers) stands at 866.4 MW, with a total demand of 624 MW. Although supply currently exceeds demand, TNB accords the need for an increase in power generation, especially in the East Coast of Sabah, on projected future demand (reaching 1,800 MW by 2020), and to reduce the reliance of the East Coast on the East-West Grid (EWG). In facing this predicament, WWF-Malaysia urges both the federal and state government to be guided by one of the principles of the Sabah Development Corridor, which is to ensure sustainable growth via environmental conservation. As a matter of principle, WWF is against power plants built in ecologically sensitive areas. Power plants should impact the environment minimally during construction as well as in operation. » Read more
