SUCCESS STORY: PROTECTING ENDANGERED MARINE SPECIES

The threats to our marine turtles come in many forms: accidentally becoming trapped in fishing nets targeting commercial fish species, habitat loss, impacts of climate change, ingestion of plastic and pollutants; poaching and trafficking which involves the act of hunting and capturing turtles at sea for their meat, parts and derivatives; and harvesting of turtle eggs legally and illegally for trade. Much needs to be done.

Our holistic approach to protecting these species means that actions are taken on the ground (working hand-in-hand with relevant authorities, private sectors and local communities to monitor nesting and poaching activities), as well as advocacy at state and national levels. Awareness on the value of protecting marine turtles, and their habitats, is becoming more mainstream.

In 2021, this was reflected in a landmark achievement when the state of Terengganu amended its Turtle Enactment 1951 to ban the sale of eggs of all species of marine turtle. The ban came into effect on 1 June 2022.
